Shiatsu is a form of Japanese massage based on the principles of acupuncture and the ancient Japanese art of anmo. Translated as “finger massage”, shiatsu massage uses gentle pressure and manipulation to adjust the body’s physical structure and correct its energy flows, supporting the body’s ability to heal and self-regulate.
As with many offshoots of traditional Chinese medicine, shiatsu has deep ties to spirituality, and is rooted in maintaining the body’s balance between yin and yang. Shiatsu massage is unique however in incorporating elements of both eastern and western medicine, utilising breathing techniques and postural correction alongside manual manipulation. As a deeply relaxing, low impact form of holistic therapy, shiatsu has significant benefits for mental health as well as the body and spirit.
