What is trichology?
Trichology is a branch of dermatology, stemming from the Greek words ‘trichos’ meaning hair and ‘ology’ meaning the study of. As the name suggests, it is the scientific study of the structure, function and diseases of the human hair and scalp.
What does a trichologist do?
A trichologist has studied anatomy and physiology, structure of the hair and skin, the body’s chemistry and its cardiovascular, nervous, digestive, endocrine and immune systems.
Medically trained to diagnose all types of hair loss, hair disorders and scalp problems, a trichologist is aware of the psychological and physical impact that disease, diet, lifestyle and chemicals can have on your hair and scalp.
Like other scientific specialisms, trichology takes a holistic approach to treatment. As well as the signs and symptoms present, all aspects of your lifestyle and external factors are looked at including diet, medical history, and well being.
